Moles: Putting celebs on the spOt?
A mole at the wrong spot and fame, happiness and fortune will be elusive, soothsayers believe. No wonder some stars had their moles removed after fortune readings. WENDY TEO reports

MICHELLE CHONG
Mole(s) position: One beside each eye, one above upper lip, and another on lower left jawline.
To remove or not to remove: "No, I'm very lazy and I don't have time to make appointments to remove them."

Stylists used to predict that the former model would never land any cosmetic jobs, because of her moles. Even now, her colleagues and producers still harp on it.

But there was an old Teochew monk who thought Michelle's moles are good luck.

She said: "My mum took me to see him before I went to the US to study Theatre Studies. She expected him to say something to dissuade me but, instead, he pointed to my moles and said 'Ho ho, zou hee jin hou' (favourable for an acting career in Teochew)."

And now, the moles are a trademark of sorts for the MediaWorks actress.

Since Michelle is now filming the food segment for Happy Rules, close-up shots of her mouth and that Marilyn Monroe mole, have made her rather famous with aunties and the hawkers.

She said: "The hawkers say my mole is good luck, and aunties claim that they recognise me under all that makeup, because of my mole!"

What geomancer Master Tan Khoon Yong of the Way OnNet Group said: "She has 'peach blossom luck' (luck in romance) because of the moles near her eyes, but is liable to have many relationships (due to the mole near her chin). Her peach blossom luck can be useful in her career, because of her good relations with other people."

Indeed, Michelle's star is rising after appearing in Happy Rules and hosting home decor show Open Sesame. As for luck in love, she claims she doesn't see it working.

When told about Master Tan's predictions, Michelle said: "Maybe I should go for a more thorough face reading soon."

STEFANIE SUN
Mole position: Beneath right eyebrow.
To remove or not to remove: Stefanie likes her mole that way, thank you very much.

Warner Music's spokesman Tan Puay Hoon said Stefanie was asked many times about her mole when she first shot to fame.

Ms Tan said: "She has said that since she's born with it, she'll leave it there.

"Anyway, it's sometimes covered by her fringe."

What Master Tan said: "Her mole is good for her career, but not good for romance. That's probably why she's single now.

"She should remove it right after her marriage, or when she decides to settle down."

Is it true that career and love don't mix?

Well, Stefanie did break up with her boyfriend not too long before she catapulted to fame.

And she has yet to find herself another Prince Charming, despite rumours linking her to singer Jay Chou and Hongkong actor Jordan Chan.

But Stefanie is not a superstitious person. So, the mole will stay.

MICHELLE LIOW
Mole position: Left cheek
To remove or not to remove: The 2001 Star Search winner will have it removed through laser surgery this Monday.

She said: "When I entered Star Search last year, a lot of people kept advising me to remove it.

"Later on, my brother went to a famous fortune-teller in the US, and he said that the mole will cause me to lose my focus, which is not a good sign.

"So I went to a dermatologist, who told me that the mole is active, and might grow bigger. Thus, I decided to remove it."

What Master Tan said: "Her mole is like Taiwanese singer Cai Qin's. It's good for career, but not good for her marriage.

"If she removes it, her career might suffer. But she should, if she is planning to get married."

Michelle's eyes widened in surprise when told about this. But she said: "In the beginning, people might recognise me only because of my 'trademark', but I'm sure they will grow to know me for what I do, and who I am."

PAN LING LING
Mole position: Left corner of nose.
To remove or not to remove: She had it zapped away in 1996.

Lingling said: "My husband had been encouraging me to do it for the longest time. A lot of producers also said that without the mole, my face will be perfect."

After a fengshui master said a removal will change her life for the better, she had it done via laser treatment at the hospital.

What Master Tan said: "Moles at the corners of the nose are bad. It means you will lose your fortune due to illnesses."

Lingling agreed that, after removing her mole, her luck became better. But when pushed for a concrete example, she laughed and replied: "Just say that I did become more prosperous!"

FANN WONG
Mole position: On left eyebrow
To remove or not to remove: Her mole is as permanent as she is unreachable.

But Fann is superstitious. She had a mole removed from her neck in 1995, after being told it was bad luck, and would bring illness.

What Master Tan said: "Generally, moles on the eyebrows bring good luck. The one that Fann has is a feng xiong hua ji (Mandarin saying for being able to overcome ill luck) mole."

Princess Fann does seem extremely lucky.

Remember her suspension by MediaCorp in 1997 when it was revealed that she had a prior six-year contract with PT Models in Taiwan - signed a year before her contract with the Singapore station in 1994? And her numerous gaffes during Star Awards ceremonies?

Obviously her devotees don't give a hoot.

MICHELLE CHIA
Mole(s) position: Beside right eyebrow and a very tiny one just beneath left eye
To remove or not to remove: "A lot of people think the small mole beneath my eye is a mascara smudge, but I'll tell them no, it's my mole. It's called a lei zhi (tear mole in Mandarin) and that's probably why I cry rather easily."

"I've never thought of removing them. It's natural to have them, and I can always conceal with makeup."

What Master Tan said: "Her mole is situated in a position where it affects her concentration. It makes her rather listless onscreen, and not as energetic."

Michelle was surprised when she heard this. Initially bubbly, the actress' tone grew sombre as she said: "When it comes to work, I think I'm quite focused. I don't think I'm listless or not energetic."

Earlier, she had laughed when she heard Master Tan's name. She remembered him from the time he had read her fortune while she was an artiste with TCS.

Michelle said excitedly: "I remember him! He said my Chinese name Yunyi was a fat person's name, and he was wondering why I wasn't fat. Then Chew Chor Meng retorted 'not yet'!"

Mr Tan also added that Michelle should not get married early. If not, she will have a few marriages.

To that, Michelle replied: "Actually, a lot of people have been telling me that (not to get married in my early 20s). But I've passed the age already (she's 27). Aiyah, you ask him when can I get married!"

As for the mole near her eye, Mr Tan said it was too small to be significant.

PHYLLIS QUEK
Mole position: Right in the middle of the forehead
To remove or not to remove: She has said before that her mole was a trademark and that she was never conscious about it "because it's part of my face".

What Master Tan said: "Like Michelle's mole, hers is also affecting her vitality, somewhat. She is not very focused onscreen, and even though her career is going well now, she can do even better without the mole."

We agree that Phyllis' concentration can do with a little improvement, as she comes across as rather distant during interviews.

As for her abilities onscreen, we'll leave it to the audience to decide.
